If you're looking for an experienced, qualified and PVG checked guitar tutor then you've come to the right place. My name is Karen Blackwood and I qualified with a BA (endorsement in guitar teaching) from The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and a PGCE from Moray House. I've been teaching the guitar for around 26 years and worked in a secondary music department for 20 years.
Over the years I have developed my own materials for teaching and constantly develop new differentiated group material which is written specifically with pupils in mind. For individual lessons I used a variety of material from Trinity Rock and Pop, Rock School, ABRSM, sheet music and I also help pupils to work out things by ear and show you how to work out your favourite songs using the internet. I present pupils for N5 and higher and can help with the composition and listening elements.
In the beginning I tend to start with small bites of well known popular songs/riffs advancing to power chords and full chords later. As pupils develop they move from a beginners group to the next level of group then into individual lessons which can also be accompanied with guitar orchestra too. Parents are encourage to attend lessons. I feel this helps with practice at home. You can also learn for free with your child. Bring along your own guitar. I also have space for adults during the day.
I love giving pupils a chance to perform and we often hold concerts. Of course you don't need to take part in these if you'd rather not.
I have a family of 5 children, 4 boys and lastly my little girl. They range from 5-16 years old.
Over the years I have taught both classical and electric guitar although I studied classical guitar with Professor Philip Thorne at The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. I also play the piano, trumpet, bass guitar, drum kit and a few other instruments.
